The Clara Stephens Building at 620 Sutter Street
The Clara Stephens Building is located in the heart of Union Square in downtown San Francisco.
This historic landmark was originally designed by famed architect Julia Morgan, who also designed
the Hearst Castle. The building originally housed the San Francisco YWCA, and later was used as a
hotel. It features high vaulted lobby ceilings, a beautiful indoor pool area, grand entrance doors,
and an exterior adorned with an array of international flags.
Today, the building offers co-ed housing for Academy students. Clara Stephens building is co-ed
and is within walking distance of many other of the Academy’s academic and residential facilities.
Campus shuttles regularly transport students to and from the building to the other Academy
facilities. The building is also the home of the Academy’s fitness gym and indoor swimming pool
equipped with locker rooms.

Beyond the gym and the student rooms, the Clara Stephens Building offers an array of other
amenities for students. The common room is equipped with a billiard room with a foosball table and
a computer kiosk; a coin-operated laundry facility with another computer kiosk; a café; a large
kitchen with pots, pans, and dishes provided; a very large and homey common room on the second
floor with a large screen TV. High speed wi-fi is also available.
