  Paul T. Delevati
Philosophy Faculty

Paul has eighteen years of professional teaching experience including a class on critical thinking at San Francisco State University, and is a seminarian at the Society of Jesus. Currently, Paul teaches philosophy in the Liberal Arts Department at the Academy of Art University. He attended the American Philosophical Association meeting in 2001. Paul received his BA in philosophy from Chico State University in 1983, and his MA in philosophy from San Francisco State University in 1998.

 

Claudia Holm

English Faculty

Claudia has sixteen years professional experience in liberal arts including management of organizational systems and implementation of educational seminars for Gold Coast Seminars in San Francisco. Her professional experience also includes the position of manager of accounts payable/receivables and payroll for Jeff Morley, DDS. She has attended the Writer's Center Workshop in San Francisco, CA, and is a member of the Associated Writer's Program (AWP). Claudia received her BA in humanities from New College of California in 1997, and her MA in writing and consciousness from New College of California in 2000.
 
Candace Huey

Art History Faculty

Candace Huey is an art history instructor at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco. Candace earned her MA in Art History at Courtauld Institute of Art (London, UK), graduating with Honors. Her thesis explores the issues surrounding the visual and material culture of 17thC Netherlandish Art. She earned her BA from UC Berkeley in the History of Art with a minor in Anthropology. Candace has worked for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco as well as a major Bay Area art gallery and has interned at Courtauld Institute Gallery and Butterfields Auction House.
 
Suzanne L'Heureux

Art History Faculty

Suzanne L'Heureux is an art history instructor at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco. She is also a practicing artist who does sculptural work and acrylic painting. Suzanne earned her MA in art history at American University (Washington, D.C.). She graduated with the mark of distinction in both her area of specialization ("Visual Arts of the United States") and in the general field of art history. While at American University, Suzanne also developed an area of concentration in European modernism. Suzanne is an active member of the College Art Association and will be presenting at the 2006 CAA conference.

Since she moved to San Francisco, Suzanne has run her own business and has worked as an art consultant at a well-known Bay Area gallery. As an undergraduate, Suzanne earned a BFA in sculpture with a concentration in painting and has taken many of the same art courses that her students at the Academy of Art University are taking today.
 
Tom Molanphy

English Faculty

Tom Molanphy received his MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Montana. His fiction has been published by Colorado College Press, and his memoir on his two years in Belize teaching Mayans, Following Mateo, is available at www.followingmateo.com.

He has taught creative writing and composition at the Academy of Art University and composition at the University of San Francisco.

 

Kimberly Ann Reid-Schafer

Art History Faculty

Art History Instructor Kimberly Schafer has been teaching at the Academy of Art University for six years. She has been an instructor for a wide range of courses at the Academy, including Art History I (through the 16th Century), Art History II (through the 19th Century), 20th Century Art, and Modern Art and Popular Culture in the Graduate Studies department.

Ms. Schafer lived and studied in England for six years and later took Academy students to both London and Italy on study abroad programs. She holds two graduate degrees from Oxford Brookes University (formerly Oxford Polytechnic), and a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in art history (fine art, painting) and a minor in anthropology. Her graduate thesis focused on the twentieth century British artist Stanley Spencer and was concerned with the subject of primitivism.

Professionally Ms. Schafer has worked at Butterfield & Butterfield in the Restoration department, worked at the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, and Courtland Institute, as well as the Museum of London Archaeological Service. She has traveled extensively through Europe as well as China and Tibet.


James Sidel

English Faculty


Jim Sidel received a BA in film Studies from the University of Pittsburgh, and studied production at Pittsburgh Filmmakers.  In 1998 he moved to San Francisco to spearhead the Academy of Art’s MPT Film Post-Production Lab.  Always a writer, Jim left the Bay Area two years later to pursue study fiction writing at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.  Iowa granted him a prestigious Teaching/Writing fellowship and the honor of studying with Pulitzer-Prize winners Marilynne Robinson and James Allan McPherson.  Jim received his MFA in 2002 and returned to the Bay Area to teach and work on his first novel.
 
Cedric Wentworth

Art History Faculty

Cedric Wentworth began his studies in stone carving and clay modeling abroad, receiving his certificate of apprenticeship at Cacciatori Studios, Italy. Returning to the United States, he continued his studies at the Art Students League in New York City.

In 1991, the City of Oakland commissioned Cedric to sculpt the monument of Jack London for the plaza at Jack London Square. This commission led him to sculpt numerous public monuments, including the Frank Ogawa monuments in front of the Civic Center of Oakland, and in Fukuoka, Japan, and the bronze wolf at Jack London Square. He has many outdoor sculptures on permanent display throughout California, including works in Fresno, Davis, Saratoga, and Santa Clara. Cedric Wentworth is currently represented by the John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis, California, and the Art Exchange Gallery in San Francisco.
 
Stephen Williams

Art History Faculty

Stephen Williams earned a BA and an MA in history at San Francisco State University. His graduate work included not only the study of civilization from antiquity through the Renaissance, but also the art of the early Renaissance. His research projects included the representation of St. Francis of Assisi in literature and art, the graphic art and text of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili of Colonna and its representation of Renaissance pagan ideals, as well as the evolution of early Christian iconography. Other topics of interest and research include the French Revolution and World War I. He is also enthusiastic about Italy and has studied Italian and history at the Scuola Leonardo Da Vinci in Rome. Mr. Williams has been teaching courses on art history and western civilization at the Academy since 2001.
 
Katie Williams

English Faculty


Katie Williams has been writing and teaching writing for nearly a decade. She earned her BA in English from University of Michigan and her MFA in Writing from University of Texas under a Michener Fellowship. Her short stories have appeared in publications such as Subtropics, AGNI, Prairie Schooner, and Indiana Review. She finds herself consistently impressed by the students at AAU.


Jose Yulo

Philosophy Faculty

Jose Yulo, Ed.D. teaches courses on philosophy, western civilization, United States history, and public speaking, utilizing a modified form of the ancient Socratic method. He has a Doctorate in Education from the University of San Francisco, with an emphasis on the philosophy of education. He also holds a Master's degree in political communication from Emerson College in Boston, as well as a Bachelor's degree in the classical liberal arts from St. John's College in Annapolis, MD. Originally from Manila in the Philippines, his research interests lie in Greek philosophy, the histories of Greek and Roman politics and warfare, and the literature of J. R. R. Tolkien.
