Academy of Art University Joins Pacific West Conference
During a press conference at the 79 Gallery, Academy of Art University announced that they will
join the Pacific West Conference for the Fall 2008 season.
PacWest Commissioner Bob Hogue presented the invitation to Dr. Elisa Stephens, the president
of Academy of Art University and Dr. Jamie Williams, the director of the athletics department. The
Academy will become the league’s eighth member in the conference.
The Academy of Art University Urban Knights will compete in 11 NCAA Division II sports
including: baseball, basketball (men’s and women’s), cross country (men’s and women’s), golf (men’s
), soccer
(men’s and women’s), softball, tennis (women’s), volleyball (women’s). The Academy’s college
sports teams will begin competing in the PacWest in fall 2008 as an independent and play a full
conference schedule beginning in 2009. Additionally, the Academy will offer collegiate sports
scholarships to prospective students.
The Academy is honored to join the PacWest Conference and compete among esteemed universities
such as Brigham Young University Hawai’i, Chaminade University of Honolulu, Dixie State College of
Utah, Grand Canyon University (Phoenix, AZ), Hawai’i Pacific University and Notre Dame de Namur
University (Belmont, CA).

sense for both the school and PacWest. Its proximity to Notre Dame de Namur, also in the Bay Area,
balances out the locations of the teams in the leagues, easing the process of travel arrangements.
Academy of Art University’s Athletics Department is dedicated to distinction, sportsmanship,
school pride, teamwork, wellness and creativity. Through Academy of Art University Athletics,
student-athletes are able to better realize their full potential academically, personally and
professionally, which is essential to college success.
Athletics Department Director Dr. Jamie Williams is a graduate of the University of Nebraska
where he was an All-American and an All-Big Eight Conference football player. He played for the
Houston Oilers and the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL for a total of 12 years and won a Super Bowl
ring in 1990 with Joe Montana.
