Academy of Art University
School of Advertising student/grads received two
bronze awards at the renowned 2009 International ANDY Awards. BFA graduates James Duffy
(Copywriter) and Woody Kurupintsiri (Art Director) won for their Moleskin print campaign, which
included advertisements
Never Crashes, Completely Wireless and
One Perfect Font, Yours. Masters student Daniel Pardilla
won for his Phillips Flat Screen print campaign,
Careful Bringing it Home.
Director of the School of Advertising Melinda Mettler calls the ANDY Awards “one of the toughest
advertising competitions in the world.” She says “ receiving an ANDY is a major win for any
student. Advertising people pay attention to awards shows. It helps them keep track of who’s doing
well in the industry.”
Having the ANDY on their resumes makes students more competitive in the industry. Moleskin
winners James and Woody have already landed jobs at San Francisco-based agency Heat.
“The award puts their resumes at the top of the pile,” said Mettler. “It says that they are
hungry and that they have a professional understanding for the business. An ANDY win can also help
international students when looking for a sponsor to work in the states.”
According to Mettler, both of the winning submissions communicated the basic product attributes
in a simple and dramatic way. “In a print ad you have three to five seconds to stop someone,
communicate the benefit and sell. Both of these submissions tell a visual story that engages
people. You want them to interact with your ad.”
Academy of Art University strongly supports students entering competitions that can further
their career. The School of Advertising pays for student submissions and covers travel to the
ceremonies, when they win.
“Networking is key in advertising. We try to give our students every opportunity to make
connections in the professional world,” she said.

The goal of the ANDY competition is to honor creativity in advertising throughout the world,
recognize the contributions of individuals and companies who create the work and encourage raising
the standards of craftsmanship in the industry. The ANDY's began as a New York print only show that
has evolved into an international show covering print, radio, television, out-of-home, direct mail,
video/cinema, interactive and other media.
A longtime participant in the ANDY Awards, Academy of Art University is proud to have its
talented students recognized by the Advertising Club of New York once again.
