Animation Alum Reaches New Heights with Pixar's "Up"

Guilherme Jacinto's is riding high on the success of his latest work with Disney/Pixar's Up. Guilherme, a 2003 Academy of Art graduate, began work with the film company as an animator upon graduation and recently caught the attention of San Antonio Current's Curblog.

Only 23, Guilherme helped create many of the movie's characters, including Carl Fredricksen, voiced by Ed Asner, and Russell, Carl’s young, unexpected sidekick.

Guilherme says the biggest challenge with Up was its animation style, which was very different from those he had worked on in the past.

"It was way more stylized," he tells the Curblog. "I worked on a lot of different characters that I had never done before. We had to do a lot of research to get everything looking right."

Guilherme entered the university with no credits to his name. In his junior year, he sent in a reel of his work, earning him an internship. Upon graduating the following year, he was hired to work on the 2008 film WALL-E.

Guilherme grew up in Brazil where he enjoyed reading and drawing comic books, but he credits another Disney/Pixar film, Toy Story, with sparking his interest in animation. He eventually left home for San Francisco and the Academy of Art University to learn animation.

Now a professional animator, Guilherme feels more inspired by things in his own life.

"As I got older, I drew from my own experiences," he says. "Now, instead of referencing movies and other things I always draw from life and whatever feels natural. I always base my ideas on people that I know."
