Online Photography Program Praised by Photo Magazine

American Photo on Campus gave Academy of Art University's online photography program high marks in its October 2009 issue.

Rachael Hacking, Online StudentThe magazine singled out the program as the "only art school in the country to offer online programs for bachelor's, master's, and associate's degrees in fine art, including photography."

It also notes the online program's accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, calling it "the ultimate step in legitimizing online education." The article goes on to say that accreditation requires the online program to "create strong, cohesive classes that match the quality of brick-and-mortarboard instruction." This includes a variety of interactive tools such as articles, videos, class discussions, quizzes, shooting assignments, interaction with the instructor and more, all focused on enabling students to create a professional-grade portfolio.

The program also provides great flexibility, as in the case of Academy of Art University student Rachael Hacking, who was featured in the article. Rachael first began classes on campus in San Francisco, and then moved to New York City. She continued her classes online, telling the magazine, "I would have lost about a year's worth of credits if I had transferred."

Also benefiting from the program's flexibility are its instructors, who are offered a reliable way to earn a living on a flexible schedule. The magazine quotes professor Jason Langer, who was able to travel to London last December for the opening of his show at the Michael Hoppen gallery, then return to his hotel room afterward to teach his students.

Jason Langer, InstructorThe online program has a considerable head start compared to other online schools, the article notes, quoting Director of Online Photography, Ryan Baldwin: "We're at a good stage because the online infrastructure is built, and we're focusing on refining what we've already created."
