One of the most exciting roles we play as landscape architects is that of stewards of our environment. Whether you are studying with us in beautiful San Francisco (a leader in urban environmental issues) or online from wherever you live, you will learn to create solutions for climate change. You will play an active role in developing green infrastructure strategies such as bioswales, retention ponds, and constructed wetlands. In our profession, we constantly strive to improve the quality of urban life for all. The curriculum in the School of Landscape Architecture will teach you how to meet extraordinary challenges like the lack of green open spaces and access to fresh foods in urban areas. Our profession is often tasked with creating beautiful and inspiring places for healing, which can lead to incredibly gratifying and satisfying projects. We will teach you how to design environments that create a positive impact on people’s mental, emotional, and physical health.
ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) is a national organization of landscape architects with affiliate student chapters. The student chapter at the School of Landscape Architecture is open to all onsite and online students. Student leaders organize events, both professional and informal, to create a supportive culture and to provide networking opportunities. Examples include inviting landscape architects to speak to students, attending conferences, hosting student meetings, and conducting portfolio workshops.
Our ASLA student chapter has a tradition of designing and installing exhibits at the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show. Competing against professional landscape architects, our students have won awards on multiple occasions.
In 2024, students won two awards for a garden design that celebrates the Golden Chanterelle—California’s state mushroom—which creates a healthy habitat for Coast Live Oak trees. Live Oak trees support more life forms than any other organisms in our ecosystem.
Featuring the best work of our graduating class, the Spring Show is always an amazing display of creativity. Our Interior Architects, Landscape Architects, and Architects are featured, along with work from the Academy’s other 19 creative schools.
